Contraception: CycleBeads Natural & Pregnancy Planning
Copper or aqua coloured beads are available at this time.
What Are CycleBeads?
CycleBeads are a colourful ring of glass beads that let you know when pregnancy is possible. CycleBeads are a tool to use the easy-to-learn Standard Days Method (SDM) - a new method of Natural Family Planning (NFP) developed by the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University.
SDM is 95% effective when used correctly.
Why Use CycleBeads?
Cycle Beads mean freedom from synthetic Class 3 carcinogenic hormones, disposables, monthly costs and harmful effects.
Cycle Beads are:
~ Hormone-free. Cycle Beads help you understand and balance your body rather than harm you!
~ Affordable: Buy them once and you are done! Compare this to the cost of a monthly prescription or periodic medical check ups and replacements.
~ Simple and Easy To Learn: You don't need to count, chart, check your cervical mucous or take your temperature every day. But you can if you want to!
~ Waste-free: There are no packages to throw away and landfill, no hormones to pollute the water stream.
~ Acceptable to all religions, faiths and spiritual beliefs. Cycle Beads and The Standard Days Method respect natural cycles without interfering with fertilized ovum.
The Standard Days Method (SDM) - a new method of Natural Family Planning (NFP) developed by the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University is 95% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly! The 95% means that 5 out of 100 women practicing this method correctly for one year will get pregnant. Did you know that the ACTUAL effectiveness rate of a number of hormonal contraceptive methods is only 92%? (from Options for Sexual Health)
The Most Common Mistake Women Who Try Other Natural Family Planning Methods Make That Leads To Unwanted Pregnancies
The most common misunderstanding about natural family planning is the belief that if you stop having sex that can lead to conception when you:
* detect ovulation:
* see that your temperature rises, or
* your mucous changes
that you are protected from pregnancy.
This will not work! There are a few problems with this retroactive method that can lead to unwanted pregnancy:
1. You can get pregnant when you have unprotected sex up to 6 days before ovulation because sperm can stay 'alive' waiting for you to ovulate!
2. Your body changes your cycle to match the cycles of women you are in close contact with such as family members, housemates, friends, lovers etc.
3. Your body can delay ovulation when you are sick, even with a cold or 'flu.
That's why the Cycle Beads give you a 12-day fertile window of white beads. This fertile window was shown to be the length of time and leeway needed to make Cycle Beads 95% effective.
How Do I Use CycleBeads?
Using Cycle Beads, you are free to have whatever sex you like, or not, when you are on the coloured beads. When you are on the white beads - days 8 through 19 - conception is possible, so you avoid sex that can lead to pregnancy or use an alternate method of contraception during this time, such as the Fem Cap and Contragel.
If you use Cycle Beads to get pregnant, you have sex that can lead to pregnancy during the days indicated by the white beads.
CycleBeads is an effective birth control option and while preventing pregnancy is the primary use of this family planning tool, health providers use CycleBeads to educate, empower, or simply inform teenagers and women of childbearing age. Read more about the many uses of Cycle Beads

I have recently come to find that birth control may have caused abortions in the past. I was unaware of this fact and after I had my 2 children my system was reacting very badly to the hormones. I searched forever for an alternative and was very upset that my doctor didn't inform me of cycle beads. This is a great system to use IT WORKS. I have used this method for 3 months and have not become pregnant. To be fair you need to use protection for about 2 weeks if you cannot wait until the green light per-say. My husband and I appreciate our intimate time together more and I will never go back.
Please read all the info before using and for those who still became pregnant all I can say is the beads were not used correctly. i recommend these to everyone.

I find cycle beads really easy to use and I love that they are 95% effective. It has been really helpful for me to keep track of my fertile times. I also love that I can use it as birth control, but also as a way to know when I am fertile to track times where I could get pregnant if I wanted to.

CycleBeads are great. When I received them, I found them very easy to use. They really help you to become more aware of your cycle and your own body. It's a great form of birth control with no side effects as long as your cycles are regular.

I just found out about CycleBeads a couple of months ago from a friend who had gotten them from the nurse practitioner where she goes for her "female care". I've been looking for a way to keep from getting pregnant without hormones. My husband and I don't mind using condoms, but we don't want to use them all the time. I ordered CycleBeads, and they came with great instructions - super easy to use, and we love them. I'll keep on using them for a year or so to NOT get pregnant, and then I'll use them TO get pregant. Perfect! The ones I have are fine, but I'm thinking of getting the Delux ones - they look beautiful.

I love the cycle beads. Yes you can keep track on a clendar but with a little one running around who likes to grab and destroy anything paper these are much better for me. I have been using them for 7 months and only them, for religous reasons I do not use any un-natural forms of birth control, and I have not become pregnant. If you follow the instructions and your cycle falls into the right number of days 26-32 they work wonderfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to use the Standard Days Method- NOT the rhythm method!! June 18, 2011
By StillWaters
“This is an easy way to implement a natural birth control method in your life. You can keep it by your bed and your partner is able to easily see what day you are on. There are certain guidelines you must follow for this method to work- be sure to read all of the instructions. I use a method taught in Your Fertility Signals: Using Them to Achieve or Avoid Pregnancy Naturally to regulate my cycles.
Keep in mind that if you use a back up method on the fertile days, then you are basically using that method, not the cycle beads (if you use a sponge for example, which is only about 80% effective, then it's no longer 95%, effective, it's only 80%)... I needed something that was very effective because I definitely did not want to get pregnant at that time... Use your own judgement to decide whether this method is right for you. ”
5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn about fertility September 15, 2010

CycleBeads -- what a great idea. I think every girl should get a pair when she's learning about her menstrual cycle so she knows that ovulation does not happen the same time every month, and that you can get pregnant on a range of days. I'd speculate that many unplanned pregnancies result from young girls and women not knowing the truth about ovulation and fertility. There is no harm in using CycleBeads as a teaching tool as long as one stresses that they are only appropriate as a contraceptive method for women with regular cycles.

This is an incredible easy form of birth control. You just move the ring every day. Simple, No mess, other than the initial price of the beads, there is no other cost. And I like that they don't scream "Hey! I'm birth control!" so if anyone sees them, they don't ask questions (I'm pretty private about that kind of thing). I also like that is helps keep track of my menstrual cycle. Another great benefit is that my husband can just look and see where I'm at as well, so he knows if its safe to have sex, or if its the wrong time of the month.

I bought these for a friend who is very much into natural living. She began to use the beads to get to know her cycle and when she and her husband began trying to conceive it took her no time at all. While I can't say that these are to credit I'm sure that it didn't hurt. I know from experience that knowing when you ovulate can be a huge step in the right direction.

This product was very accurate and extremely easy to use. I used this more to determine the date my period should be starting than to get pregnant.
4.0 out of 5 stars A good option to consider, August 7, 2011

I have both the beads and the iPhone app. I think the beads are a good option for young girls once their cycle has stabilized. It will help them visualize their cycle and get in tune with their body. The beads might also be useful for couples because both partners can know if pregnancy is likely, and act accordingly... Most of all, I appreciate the emphasis on a natural and affirming approach to menstruation.

So I have been using this method for 1 year. my cycles varied from 28-33 days hope this helps others. I knew that this would work for me, in 2005 my gynecologist said that this stuff did not work. Are they not trained or just misinformed about NFP?
