Join Your Local Food Cooperative: in Toronto, It's Karma!

LOOKING FOR NEWS FOR FEBRUARY? OOPS LINK ERROR!!! GO HERE: http://www.anarreshealth.ca/node/693

Karma Co-op is a non-profit food store, owned co-operatively by the people who shop there - its members. Founded in 1972, Karma provides its members with wholesome, economical food. We have about 500 working members households and 389 non-working member households and 1 corporate.

And Now We Are Looking to Grow Karma!

Shopping at Karma is a friendly experience, without the muzak, gimmickry or hard-sell tactics of supermarkets. You can hang up your coat, mind your child in the membership room, meet your neighbours who have similar interests and make a phone call. It's our store. And nobody profits except the members. At Karma Food Coop Store, the only consumer cooperative store in Toronto, our aim is to:

* Create a community of actively participating members;
* Foster a healthy connection to the food we eat, the people who grow it, and the other organizations who share our beliefs;
* Co-operatively educate ourselves on environmental issues;
* Exercise political and economic control over our food;

by operating a viable co-operative food store.

Karma Coop was again highlighted in NOW Magazine's Best of T.O.

The Big Carrot has selection, and Whole Foods has style, but for total commitment to the ethics of buying and selling food, it’s hard to beat this non-profit, customer-owned and -operated market. Membership requires a one-time refundable initiation fee, a small annual fee and the option of two hours of labour a month to avoid a 10 per cent surcharge. Produce is the main calling card (dozens of locally grown items) while co-op members also have access to a freezer section, dairy, dry goods, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene stuff, an impressive selection of bulk goods.

NOW IS THE TIME TO JOIN KARMA

Our store is located on 739 Palmerston Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, close to the Bathurst subway station. Collectively, we do what is required to make the store work. Together, we are able to achieve control over the sources, quality and price of our food. That makes Karma a real alternative to commercial stores.

Joining Karma is easy!

Interested in becoming a member? Only members can shop at Karma Co-op. But you can do a one-time trial shop to try us out before joining (payment in cash only). To help you decide whether to join, we invite you to a short orientation session at the store. Email orientation [at] karmacoop.org or call Susan Stewart at (416) 537-7076 if you are interested in attending an orientation session.

Find out more at www.karmacoop.org. Karma Co-Op, 739 Palmerston at Barton, 416-534-1470
