ContraGel / Caya Diaphragm Gel comes in a 60ml tube that includes instructions in English and the product contains only these natural ingredients:
- Water
- Lactic Acid (an acid component discovered in milk but not sourced from milk per se. Contragel Green is vegan.)
- Sodium Lactate (natural salt from fermentation, vegan)
- Methylcellulose (natural thickener or gel from plants)
- Sorbic acid (a natural organic compound found in rowan tree berries Sorbus aucuparia used as an antimicrobial preservative)
ContraGel has been proven effective in clinical tests and is CE and Health Canada-approved. ContraGel can be used with any natural latex or silicone as well as rubber diaphragms or cervical caps. ContraGel is also compatible with natural latex rubber or polyurethane condoms and is also water-soluble. Expiry dates are imprinted on the bottom of the box as well as on the bottom of the tube itself.
Why an alternative to nonoxynol-9 (N-9) spermicide?
People who use barrier methods such as the 98% effective FemCap, condoms, or diaphragms for contraception most often use a contraceptive gel or spermicide. Most spermicides have included a popular ingredient called nonoxynol 9 (N-9). Nonoxynol 9 (N-9) is a chemical that disturbs or compromises the function of the head of the sperm, thus rendering it useless. While effective, an ever-increasing number of women experience irritation and infections from nonoxynol 9 (N-9) due to its inherent toxicity.
N-9 does not protect you from STIs and it may increase your risk of HIV.
In the United States, Food and Drug Administration rules state that warnings must appear on the outside of the carton and must say that nonoxynol-9 does not protect against STDs and may increase a person's chances of contracting HIV. They also must state that the product cannot be for rectal use, may cause vaginal irritation and should not be used if you or your partner is HIV positive. In Canada, N-9 spermicides have ceased to be widely available.
Some other products use another chemical compound known as the F-5 gel. ContraGel is the first and only spermicide that effectively uses only natural ingredients.
In North America almost all spermicides have been systematically discontinued by various manufacturers apparently due to safety concerns. Consequently, many different companies producing barrier-type products have opted to close their doors or have discontinued products such as diaphragms, which rely heavily on spermicide for their effectiveness. This has significantly reduced choice and left many women in North America with very little or no options when it comes to low-cost natural contraceptive alternatives. Many women are only told about hormonal contraception as an option. With profits coming in every month from women on prescription contraception, it is not surprising that the medical profession and big pharma are in no hurry to support or advance the progress of science in an effort to replace hormonal contraception and irritating spermicides with safer methods.

ContraGel Green a Safe, Effective and Affordable Choice.
ContraGel is a naturally green barrier gel for use with diaphragms and cervical caps. This water-soluble gel contains no synthetic or artificial ingredients and is completely chemical-free.
Available in a 60ml tube, it contains the following ingredients:
* Water

Sell By Dates: With orders of single tubes, I supply the nearest Sell By date (but not OUT of date, of course!) With orders for multiples, the first tube will be the nearest date, and all the other tubes will be for the farthest Sell By date. I have not seen any other supplier provide a policy or guarantee to their customers.
How many tubes you use depends on how often you use the gel and how much you use each time. The manufacturer, Med Intim, recommends that you use a new tube every 3 months. Most clients buy Contragel four times per year, often ordering 4 at a time. The maximum number of tubes I recommend for one client for her own use is 5. I've added the option to buy 10 for those who are pooling a larger order with friends!

Hi Tracey, I'm sorry it has taken me a while to leave feedback on my order. It's great and this has been a wonderful experience! I plan on buying more Contragel from you again in the future! Sounds odd but I wanted to verify that this stuff actually worked first...and it does!
I've been using a diaphragm for about two months now, and while it's great, spermicide, nonoxynol-9, is not! Thanks to that gel I have had TWO urinary tract infections which became kidney infections!! I guess this stuff is still approved here because not enough people use it anymore; most doctors push condoms and the pill. :/

Q: I didn't see on the instructions how long the gel and diaphragm should be left in...I know from reading about other gels it's normally 6-8 hours. Do you have any idea about how long to leave the gel in?
I had also read that Contragel is as effective as N-9...do you have any first hand experiences/stories that this is the case?

Un/fortunately, I have never needed to use the FemCap or Contragel personally, but I have enjoyed distributing these for my clients leaving oral contraception and no one has gotten pregnant accidentally!
Follow the instructions you received for diaphragm use with N-9 spermicide.
The primary function of a spermicide jelly is to physically trap the sperm.
Secondarily, n-9 kills sperm and the acidity from the lemon in the Contragel immobilizes them.
There's no difference as far as I know in use or effectiveness.
The diaphragm, as you know, must always be used with a gel.
Congratulations on quitting The Pill and learning natural fertility awareness.

Diaphragm Gel - Contragel green
Gel to be used with diaphragms or cervical caps
Contragel geen® covers as a physical barrier the cervix and reduces ph-value of the mucus. This gel should be inside the cavity of the diaphragm or cervical cap before inserting it inside the vagina. It is an additional security at the use of this barrier contraceptive method. Since 1972, Contragel geen® has a well established use and safety. Its previous brand name was Contracep Green from NVSH Netherlands.
Application
Before inserting the diaphragm or cervical cap into the vagina cavity, the gel should be given in a small volume of 3 ml into the cavity of the diaphragm or cervical cap. Now, the diaphragm or cervical cap is folded and inserted into the vagina. Please assure that the cervix is dipped into this gel and the membrane covers the cervix. The cervix is covered and closed twice: by the silicone membrane and the gel. These two barriers are physical barriers and prevent that sperm cells that by-passed the silicone barrier, cannot not move into the cervix and uterus. Please note the instructions of your diaphragm or cervical cap.
